Thanks for the tests you are doing. As you say, it's a question of size. We have to improve the way we access large DBF files.
I have a DBF file with 1229 records and 9 columns, and its size is 572 kilobytes, so I guess your DBF file has dozens of columns. If you remove some columns of your DBF file, you will probably be able to open it. I often do that with OpenOffice, treating the DBF as a spreadsheet, and then saving it as a DBF again. Be careful not to change the order of the records. Just an idea until we fix the problem and publish a new release.

I detect, that the opening of a Shapefile depends on it's
size. Something smaller then a dbf-file size of 1.600 KBytes
you can open it. Somethin bigger than 3.200KBytes you can't.
Sorry about my imprecise answer.
The < 1.600KByte File has, 496 features
The >= 3.200KByte File has, 1025 features
I tried different paths, the message of the logfile:
