[Gvsig_english] how to perform a calculation of a field

I am using gvSIG 2 (build 1220) and trying to update a field have 10
thousand records with the string Highway.  I have written the following
expression equals([road_type],'Highway'), but the field is populated with
0.  What am I doing wrong
