[Gvsig_english] unable to open an existing project

File corruption is not the same as performance issues.

The project file should ALWAYS be written correctly, no matter how many
other processes are running in parallel on your system.
The file corruption you have encountered is a serious bug and needs to
be corrected. For that to happen, we need to establish exactly under
which circumstances it occurs.

There should be no relation between the "amount of data" and the time
it takes to save a project file. The data itself is not saved in the
project file, only references to the data sources. So unless you have
a massive number of layers in your project, there should be no problem.
In my case, gvSIG has never taken more than a few seconds to save
a project file, even with massively large datasets.

If gvSIG gets too slow to reasonably handle your project, then you need
to upgrade your system with more RAM and faster hard disks.
Another way to boost performance is by upgrading the Java VM gvSIG
uses to 1.6 Update 7.
