Not sure of that... since map layout and map view should not mix
capability. For me map layout is for outside map feature, north
arrow, legend, scale bar or text, picture etc..

For me, the best way should be, if it's implemented, to add annotation
feature with floating position. So, you could automaticaly generate
label from shape or others entity and then, if the automatic is not
good enough, convert these label to annotation (like in arcmap) and
put these in a database (hoping gv_sig will support file geodatabase
of acmap9,3).

Then, when in annotation, it could be possible to add a position
feature with the label positif coordinates. Like in arcmap you could
place a graphic label point but that label is free to move and you
have a choice of arrow, box around the label with extension to the
point... So, for each annotation 2 sets of coordinates shoud be
record... the one for the position of the label place and the other
for the center of the label text or graphic, the last one being freely
move if neccessary in and editing session....

By the way, this is also in my wich list for symbol.... Lot of time in
mapping, we have point of interest (gas station, restaurant, marina,
etc) to close together... So,,, you have to place them away form the
accurate place where they are making the need to duplicate the poi
source to meet project need... So,,, being able to just show poi with
the symbol but, if not in a good representation place, just, in a
specific project, link to a position file and then move the drawing
place for the pictogram leaving in place the point position of this
poi in the good place... Then, with option to show or not the leading
line, arrow or ...
