I knew that you could turn off certain toolbars but this is not the problem. Congested toolbars containing things I don't need is my problem and a desire to simplify various menus/toolbars to avoid confusion.<BR>

Your suggestion of changing the config files is a good tip but is not really obvious. <BR>

Thoughts that come to mind...<BR>
1. It would be desirable to have a dialog where things can be adjusted rather than directly editing the underlying files. Although, having recently converted to Ubuntu, this comment probably applies to all Linux Software.<BR>
2. It would be desirable that your selections are stored in a 'user preference' file that is respected and recognized with future versions so that your selections would not be lost the next time you upgraded the software; otherwise you are creating, dare I say it, a partial fork in the distribution tree. maybe gvSIG should be modified to allow regional/industry/personal customizations to be readily imported via the main menu.<BR>
3. It would be desirable to hide certain things at certain times as some icons are not really relevant at certain times and are at others.<BR>
4. It would also be desirable to loose the icons but leave the menu option. I suspect this option is already available as some menu options don't have corresponding icons (e.g. select by layer).<BR>

Look for the <menu> tags. They are easy to understand.

many of the same have garbled names, so it is hard to understand

In the OADE version, we went through a lot of pain to reorganize

It would be advantageous to have toolbars and menus customisable.
There a quite a lot of tools that could be hidden to reduce clutter on the GUI interface.
A good example is the multitude of selection tools - select by point, select by rectangle, select by polygon, select by line, select by circle, select by buffer, select by throwing a dog over your shoulder - these could be left in the menu and most except for a few core tools removed from the toolbar essentially simplifying the GUI and making it less cluttered.
