Maybe it would be possible to introduce a configuration setting
which could toggle between "novice" and "advanced" GUI modes.
It would be possible to allow/disallow certain action, modify
GUI entries and display more or less warning messages, depending
on the mode that gvSIG is running in.

IMHO this is going too far as I am not sure if a representative analysis of user behaviour (like a Usability test) is likely to be done by the community or will yield meaningful results at all. Besides the interesting discussion about what "copy" means in different contexts in the end Klaus' loss of data was caused by himself deleting the attribute data of his shapefile (as I said sh++ happens and I feel sorry for him). There a dialog appears already asking if data should be saved or not.
Maybe it is sufficient to elaborate this dialog a little by adding some kind of advice on what's going to be deleted.
For example something like " If you are working on a copy of your source file remember that changes will affect it as well". Maybe a reference to the manual could be included too (see p. xx).
So, in general, we could try to work on improving existing features of gvSIG instead of creating new ones.

Best,

Johannes
