<span>For those of you who are interested, I wish to divide France and surrounding regions into regions, and have been looking at elevation, roman roads and rivers and river basins Rivers tend to run through low altitudes, and their basin boundaries tend to
be at high altitude, and so altitude doe snot add much information. I have city data from Bairoch, I have his populations, and I looked up the Lat/Lon of the cities. I am trying to divide france into what would be "natural regions" not dependent on the modern
political boundaries. I have found that river basins approximate modern and historical political boundaries. The division of Charlemagnes Empire into 3 in 843 CE seems to nearly confirm with rivers or river basins throughout.</span></div>

I prefer it because it is one of the few non-commercial extant elevation<br>
sources that has extensive technical documentation on what it was derived<br>
from, how it was processed, and the quality level in any particular region<br>
( see the overview report linked above ). In the United States, the 3D<br>
Elevation Program (3DEP) is the best nation-wide available (<br>
<a href="https://www.usgs.gov/core-science-systems/ngp/3dep">https://www.usgs.gov/core-science-systems/ngp/3dep</a> ). It also has a clear<br>
intellectual property trail if you are publishing or re-distributing your<br>
data products downstream.<br>
<br>
Of course, specific counties, provinces, municipalities, and agency<br>
projects may have far more up to date and higher resolution elevation data.<br>
