I see the following advantages:

* mails are archived permantently and can be accessed in various ways.

     * On the web, using frames and threads.
     * On the web, using a blog-like, flat interface.
     * Using an NNTP newsreader.
     * RSS feeds:
          1. All messages from the list, with excerpted texts.
          2. Topics from the list, with excerpted texts.
          3. All messages from the list, with complete texts.
          4. Topics from the list, with complete texts.

* you get a searchable archive with links to the articles
=> very good for referencing older posts

* a user can subscribe easily and unsubscribe easilier through a 
mailprogram/newsreader or the online interface which also allows to post 
a message.
=> good for users who don't use the program everyday but want to ask 
questions etc.

* you can follow the discussions in a threded view from any pc without 
the need for your mail program.

* Gmane spansors hosting => no disadvantage just more conveniences.
