Hello everybody,
I would like to donate for free to the Gvsig's project and to its
community a set of 50 new North arrows to add in the folder of gvsig
together with the 8 others North arrows already present by default.
The path to find them is
bin/gvSIG/extensiones/com.iver.cit.gvsig/northimages.
You can import them as svg images as well.
To colour them you have to use Inkscape before importing them because,
at present, it's not possible to do it with Gvsig.
In this regard, Arcgis 9 has more than 95 North arrows symbols and I
would like to increase the Gvsig's number to equalize a little bit the
score... :-) .
I drew all the images with Inkscape 0.45.1 (a BIG thanks to every member
of this list for the past suggestions).
Their format is svg pure (not Inkscape svg).
I changed the text font with an object to avoid problems (sorry for the
translation).
They are all black (but one can change their colour with Inkscape).
The symbols are ordered alphabetically regarding their "complexity".
The first10 symbols pointing to North (gvsig_1 until gvsig_10); 30
symbols pointing to N-E (gvsig 11 until gvsig 40); the last 10 symbols
pointing in all directions (gvsig 41 until gvsig 50).
For the 10 last arrows (gvsig_40 to gvsig_50) I didn't use the English
to translate the directions so you'll find O instead of W to indicate
the West. Of course, one can use the first 40 symbols to avoid problems
of translation.
I named the symbols gvsig_1, gvsig_2 and so on in order to avoid future
problems for their translation towards differents languages, Besides, I
haven't the imagination to invent 50 names for the images.
Arcgis names its images Esri North 1, Esri North 2 and so on.
I checked all the images with Gimp, Scribus.
Of course, I have tested all of them with Gvsig, one by one.
In particular, I tested them with a Windows platform (Windows xp home
edition and Windows 2000 professional) on 3 different computers.
I saved some map as pdf and I printed them to check the results.
I used both Gvsig 1.1 portable and Gvsig 1.1 installed on my computer.
I attached a zip file with a pdf file with the preview of all the images
and, needless to say, the zip file with the 50 svg images to try them at
will.
If someone has the time to test some of them it would be really helpful.
At present, I don't know if all of them will be accepted from the
Gvsig's team. It's not up to me.
Nevertheless, I do hope the best of them will be included in some future
Gvsig's versions.
Have fun and keep going using Gvsig :-)
Best regards
Silvio Grosso
