My Geoserver version support both the WFS versions.

Geoserver development is implementing the following security policy
system: http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDOC/2.6+Security+subsystem
At the moment it uses a Basic Authentication method (and a form based one).
This simple method is supported by other servers and proxies (like the
Deegree OWSProxy and InteProxy).
ArcGis Server exposes WFS services with HTTP Basic, HTTP Digest, or
Integrated Windows Authentication authentication schemas [1]

It could be a first step...
