Hi John,
yes open source GIS is quite the revelation for teaching, isn't it?
I remember my own students back in my days as a university lecturer
and how they loved the extra freedom that came with it.
Make sure to also consult the pages about known bugs and limitations
on the OA gvSIG websites - save your students and yourself some
frustration.
Best,
Ben

Subject: [Gvsig_english] GIS for all
Thanks to Benjamin Ducke for pointing me to gvSIG OA
(http://www.oadigital.net/software/gvsigoade/gvsigdownload ) and to
Antonio Ordoñez for pointing me to a version of Sextante with useful
help files (http://forge.osor.eu/plugins/wiki/index.php?Downloads&id=13&type=g
).
I now have a really useful GIS system with which I can do real work
and at the same time provide a teaching environment in which the
student can take home the entire environment if they are using a
computer running Windows and almost the entire environment (sans the
terrific Sextante help files) if they are using Mac OSX or Linux.
I would like to emphasize that the Sextante help files in the version
available on forge.osor.eu permit me to review the various Sextante
tools and decide rather quickly whether one or more tools might be
useful in my work application – sort of a mental join between my work
projects and available tools.
Finally as America is becoming increasingly bilingual, it is wonderful
to introduce a software environment into the classroom that originates
in Spanish.
Thanks again.
