Hi Benjamin,

About the file selector article, as the author explains, you lose some 
flexibility and customization options by using the awt file dialog 
instead of the swing one.

I think it's a matter of usability which must be solved at the 
application level, making sure all gvSIG file dialogs have the same 
behavior and adding more functionality like the Simon's suggestions, 
file previewing, etc.
