*"gvSIG & FOSS in der Praxis"on 3^rd of february 2010
*For the first time the event "gvSIG und FOSS in der Praxis" (gvSIG &
FOSS in practice) was held in Munich.
Well-known OS companies presented their products in several
practical-oriented workshops.
After a short greeting by Ulrich Steiner (CSGIS), the new features of
the gvSIG version 1.9 were presented by José Canalejo (CSGIS) and Ruth
Schönbuchner (CSGIS).
Toni Pignataro (WhereGroup) focused on the gvSIG "publishing extension"
for presentation of geodata on the Internet. He gave an overview of
gvSIG, PostgreSQL and Mapbender.
Putting gvSIG in a similar context with "GeoExt" and "GeoServer" was
demonstrated by Andreas Hocevar (OpenGeo). The "publishing extension"
can also be used together with GeoServer, and the resulting WMS/WFS --
services can be processed by a web-based client, such as "GeoExt" with
his user-friendly, JavaScript based frame work.
gvSIG was extended regarding meta data and can be utilised together with
the standardized "GeoNetwork opensource" meta data catalog, where meta
data can be easily administrated and published as a catalog service.
gvSIG gives the opportunity to manage these catalog services. David
Arndt (geoinformation+planung) gave a presentation about the
interoperability of these two products.
Victor Olaya (Sextante Geospatial Services) gave a short demonstration
of Sextante software that can be used as an gvSIG extension. If all
current implemented Sextante algorithms will be used together with its
WPS functionality including some GRASS modules, about 600 algorithms for
vector- and raster analysis will be available through the Sextante work
frame.
Francisco Penarrubia (Software Colaborativo) gave an overview about the
current state of the gvSIG networking extension. New features like e.g.
"Closest Facility", "OD-Matrix" or "Service Area" are already
implemented and currently the functionality will be adapted regarding
the simulation of water networks in Uganda, Africa.
Finally there was time for further discussions and getting to know some
more aspects of "interoperability" while sitting together in a
well-known Bavarian beer taverne in Munich.
It was a special honor to welcome a participant coming from as far as
Kampala, Uganda to Munich!
We are looking forward to further events!
