ed with other software. I'd say that this is why so many projects are havin=
g problems connecting to ArcSDE.
To get the ArcSDE jar files (either by yourself or your ArcSDE Admin), I'd =
suggest:
* Install the ArcSDE Developer Kit for your version of ArcSDE. A link fo=
r instructions for v9.3 is at [1]. This install can be done on a local PC. =
It does not have to be done on the server hosting ArcSDE.
* Upgrade your SDK with the appropriate Service Packs and Patches to get=
to your Organisation's version of ArcSDE.
* find the .jar files in your ArcSDE SDK install path
* copy the .jar files to the appropriate folder/dir on your gvSIG instal=
lation. On my mac, this is at [2].
I'm still learning gvSIG, so there may be other things that you need to do =
to configure gvSIG.
Perhaps someone else can fill in the rest of what needs to be done.

Hi Paul,
there is a known problem in gvSIG OADE 2010 that applies to
Oracle connections and it is possible that it applies to ArcSDE,
as well. Please try downloading and applying the patch from here:
http://oadigital.net/software/gvsigoade/gvsigbugs
Search for
"Oracle table selection throws NullPointerException error" and
you will find it.
Let us know if it helps.
Best,
Ben

I haven’t looked at this myself yet, however a common problem that cl=
ients have when connecting to ArcSDE is the issue of versions (ESRI softwar=
e included).

I found from bitter experience that you need the ensure that your client so=
ftware is precisely the same version as the ArcSDE version. That gets down =
to Major Version, Minor Version, Service Pack and Patch.

So for example, if you are using ArcSDE 9.3 SPn Patch n, you really need to=
ensure that your client software is also using the same version.

You will see conflicting advice on ESRI’s forums, but the advice abov=
e came from an ESRI support call. It enabled us (at a previous organisation=
) to establish a robust and very stable environment.

So, what does this mean for gvSIG:

I’d try getting the ArcSDE jar files for the version of ArcSDE that y=
ou are using.
