[Gvsig_english] gvSIG and a Samsung N130 NetBook

Deal all,

Re. gvSIG on typical low-res netbook screens (1024 x 600):
The problem with gvSIG is that it uses an internal window manager
that bypasses the system-wide services, so things like holding
down the ALT key to move an oversized window around the screen
don't work.

However, some windows are managed by the system's wm (such as
the file selector), and for those the above works.

Most dialogs (also the Properties dialog) are now also resizable.
So if they are too big to display, you can shrink them by grabbing
any window corner with the mouse.

There are some windows that are still fixed size, internally
managed and too big for low-res screens. Most notably the
Project Manager. I will think about shrinking those a little
for the next gvSIG OADE edition, so things run better on
netbooks.

I have no experience with Windows on a netbook and frankly
do not see why anyone would like to torture themselves
with that, but the above should be about true for Windows,
as well. Note however, that a convenient method to move windows
around the screen holding down a button does not exist on Windows,
anyhow.

Alternatively, get a netbook with a slightly larger screen
and higher resolution and you won't have any of the above
problems.

Note also that GIS is no fun on a small screen, whatsoever.
If you are thinking about doing long hours of GIS work on a
netbook, better take a good yoga course with you, as well,
because you are in for some serious neck and shoulder pain...

Best,

Ben

Dear Sal,

I have been succesfully running gvSIG on a netbook for over a year now and can recommend it. I have an Advent 4211c (MSI Wind) and the specs you listed below are the same on my netbook.

The gvSIG OAD 2010 Edition works fine, if a bit slow, but this edition is generally slower than 1.1.2 just is.

I have, however, had a couple of issues running the 2010 edition on a netbook with the small screen (and these problems do not exist with gvSIG 1.1.2):
The properties box of any layer in the TOC is too large for the window. Labels cannot be activated and other properties cannot be changed this way, as it is simply not possible to reach the "Apply" and "Okay"/"Accept" buttons. This sounds stupid, but is true. Not even holding "Alt" whilst trying to shift the properties window works - it just moves the main window.
Changing of layer symbology is therefore best done through double-clicking the layer's sybol in the TOC. This problem also exists on Ubuntu.
The same issue occurs when in the map/printing menu - the properties box for some items, such as frames/boxes is too large, which is a nuissance.

My way around the problem was to connect an external (largish) monitor and change the screen resolution. This - however - did not work in Ubuntu and should - if you're travelling - not be your only workaround!

All the analysis tools and Sextante, however, work fine, and I can, despite these screensize issues, recomment gvSIG OAD 2010 for netbooks!

Hope that helped!

All the best,

Anna

Dear All,

Can any of you tell me if gvSIG 1.9 - or more particularly the Oxford
Archaeology 2010 edition, beta2 - can run easily on a Samsung N130 netbook,
with 1gb ram and Windows XP Home edition. I'm keen to get a netbook and the
size, and price, of the Samsung is just right - I'll be doing a lot of
travelling in the next year.

Regards to all,

Sal Garfi
