Hi Jorge, Flavio, Ben and all,
the same issue [1] was dealed and soon dismissed in january 2008

With regard to symbology, definition query is a different thing,
since a change of symbology hides feature visibility in the view (but
the correspondent records appears in the attribute table) , while
definition query hides unfiltered features at all.
