[Gvsig_english] Basic projection issues

Hello,

According to that, your source shape file is in the geodetic coordinate system EPSG:4326 aka WGS84, not in transverse mercator.

I have not found Gall-Peters among gvSIG's preconfigured projectons. If you're interested in that one, you will probably be able to use by setting a new custom SRS within gvSIG.

Unlike Gall-Peters, the Mollweide projection is actually ready for use in gvSIG. These are the steps:

- create a view and before adding any layer, open the view properties dialog, click on the projection button [ ... ]. In the new dialog, choose the ESRI item in the combo box and search for 54009. Select the matching item and click OK

- Open the add layer dialog, choose your world shapefile and before clicking OK, click on the [...] button to let gvSIG know the coordinate system of your shapefile (otherwise gvSIG will believe it is also in ESRI:54009, which is wrong). This time choose the EPSG item in the combo box and search for 4326 (because your shp is in EPSG:4326). Select that item and click ok. You don't need to use any other option, and your view should look like this:

What you have now is a shapefile in EPSG:4326 in your computer which is being reprojected on the fly to Mollweide each time you move the viewport of your view. At this point it's recommended to export that layer to a new shapefile (suggested name: "world_mollweide_esri_54009.shp") and add it again to your view (this time you dont need to specify a different coordinate system) then do other things with it.

The entire text of the .prj file is as follows:

GEOGCS["GCS_WGS_1984",DATUM["D_WGS_1984",SPHEROID["WGS_1984",6378137.0,298.257223563]],PRIMEM["Greenwich",0.0],UNIT["Degree",0.0174532925199433]]
