Just for a more precise information:
I am using the jpg image with a world file .jpgw
The image opens on the ArcView 3.2 whithout any problem.

This may be caused by the image format. JPG doesn't use overviews and
it's not oriented to large images.
I think you should use Erdas (img), GeoTiff (tif) or ErMapper (ecw)
formats for these purposes, i.e. gvSig loads a 100MB ecw image in a whisper.
