We have a colleague working on mac on that speed problem, and I hope he 
will be answering mac-related questions soon.

On java 1.4/1.5: gvSIG compiles on java 1.4, and if you're planning to 
use java 1.5 you'll need to rebuild all dependencies. We have detected 
extrange behaviors related with using JRE 1.5 with applications compiled 
with java 1.4

The 3D visualization was a proof of concept I programmed for evaluating 
java and java3D, multiresolution and WMS access. There are no documents 
writen about it, and it's a development line stopped. Currently we're 
working on a Java/OSG prototype, with same functionality but quicker, 
less resources consumer, and much more versatile.
