times faster in "Maps" than in "Views"?

In fact, JAI seems to be installed by default on OS X (at least on
10.4, the one I'm using); its classes are located in /System/Library/
Java/Extensions.
JAI Image I/O is not installed, and is not available for OS X. You
can install its pure java portion as found on the Linux or Windows
JAI Image I/O download: copy the jai_imageio.jar file to ~/Library/
Java/Extensions. Native libraries and functionalities will be
missing, of course.
