Hi,

Another way null shapes are (unwillingly) created in a line layer: 

Set the first point of a polyline and then select "Terminate" from the right-click menu before inserting the second vertex.

This creates a shape with no geometric data. "Zoom to feature" centers on (0;0) in gvSIG, while viewing it in QGIS shows that the geometry doesn't exist. (NaN;NaN)
