as far as I know there is already an extension for adding new field to an
attributes table, although it hasn't been released yet.

In the SEXTANTE toolbox you can find a very simple extension that calculates
both area and perimeter. (Herramientas para capas vectoriales/Propiedades
geométricas de polígonos).
