Hi Thomas,
firstly you have to define the unit of measurement in the View
Properties, secondly start editing your layer, create a new field e.g.
"area" (integer or double), select this field, press on Field Calculator
button, double click on numeric command 'area' and execute it.
Finally stop editing... and so the die is cast! :)
