Hello everybody,
I would like to know whether or not a gvSIG 2 portable version for Windows is planned to be released in some time in the future?
At present, I am aware my question is a little bit early because gvSIG 2 beta is supposed to
be released at the end of June.
Probably, at the moment, nobody knows precisely when a stable version will be ready...
In Italy, in our Public Organization we are happily using gvSIG 1.1 portable (we have "installed" it in 5 laboratories).
This version, released at the 3rd conference in Valencia in November, is very great (we are really happpy about it).
In my opionion it will be really important to have a portable version for gvSIG 2 as well.
The best would be to have Sextante included in tha package (together with the other extensions, e.g the 3-D pilot extension).
A portable version will be helpful for at least 4 reasons:
1) In many Public Organizations it is not possible to install any software without the Administrator authorisation (and this is not an easy thing to get in Italy!).
Sometimes, the Administrator is very strict when he doesn't know the software. When the authorisation is denied a portable version will do no harm.
2) Most important softwares have a portable version (such as OpenOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, Qgis, Inkscape, Scribus, Gimp and many others).
3) When you want to teach gvSIG to some friends or colleagues, in most cases, it is better not to install any software in a computer that is isn't yours in order to avoid damages :-)
4) As far as I know, ArcGis hasn't got any portable version. As a consequence, this would be a Must for gvSIG :-)
Keep up the wonderful work.
Best regards
Silvio
