Having to manually edit the SH or the INI files is not very elegant, indeed.
 
The OA people have partially addressed this issue by allowing the user to choose how much memory is assigned to gvSIG while installing it. That not only lets the user choose the right value. It also reminds the user about the importance of doing so.
