I would try and read the manual for Version 1.1.2 to help get the 
basics. You can find it here...

Just quickly...
1. When adding a layer to your view you are asked to identify its 
projection. You can use the EPSG code to identify the Spatial reference 
System. If it differs from what you set as a default for the project or 
the View's SRS it will reproject on the fly. Most of this is covered in 
the manual.
2. Once the layer is in the view right-click the layer name in the 
Table-of-Contents and select "started editing". A toolbar will then 
appear. Most actions are self explanatory and are also covered in the 
manual.
