[Gvsig_english] QUESTION gvSIG 1.9 (BN 1253) -- "Line does not cross rectangle"

Hi,

While editing a shapefile I occasionally get a grey box appear around the 
geometry being selected. When I try and cut this geometry in half it says 
"Line does not cross rectangle"

a) what does the grey box signify and  why does it only occasionally appear?

b) on numerous occasions, despite crossing the box, the geometry is not cut. 
What is the routine looking for when validating the request?
