[Gvsig_english] field type double, decimal precision

Dear list,
when adding a new coloumn in the table's properities, the user can 
specify the "decimal precision".
But what does this option actually mean? I know that it's _not_ "decimal 
places" (there is no possibility to set
the number of decimal places, or ...?)
